In this short video intro, you'll get to meet Quentin Monden, the incoming Executive Director of the Sibling Transformation Project (STP), along with India Harville, your wonderful course instructor.
In Module 1, we invite you to explore your access needs in this very moment. We also talk about the important difference between access and accommodation.
In Module 2, we explore definitions of disability and ableism and their different facets. We also consider how ableism is present all around us: across society, at the institutional and systemic levels, and in our interpersonal relationships.
In Module 3, we explore two models of disability: the medical model and the social model. We also talk about a concept called "the messy middle," which relates to navigating options for cure and remediation.
In Module 4, we help define internalized ableism, providing numerous examples to which many/all of us can relate. We also explore the important links between ableism and other forms of oppression, in particular white supremacy.
In Module 5, we guide you through some critical language choices, helping you discern what terms to use and avoid. We also cover the difference between person-first language and identity-first language; inspiration porn; and common tropes around villains and disfigurement in popular culture.
In Module 6, we enthusiastically invite you to exit the "right vs. wrong" binary. We encourage you to show up imperfectly, in your full and glorious humanness, with a view towards collective liberation.
